Secretariat (March 30, 1970 – October 4, 1989) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse arguably the, if not one of the, greatest racehorses of all time: Secretariat not only won the 1973 Triple Crown but set track records in two of three races in the Series that stand to this day, the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. Secretariat was affectionately nicknamed "Big Red" by his ownerbecause of his size and brilliant chestnut color, or, perhaps, in an attempt to draw comparisons to the great Man o' War.
What is it about these magnificent animals that fascinate us so? The elegance, the grace, the pure muscularity, the power, the speed? In some horses these elements come together in an unmatched combination that takes the breath away and people are spellbound as these champions delight us with their feats.
In South Africa names like Sea Cottage, Mazarin, Empress Club, Flaming Rock, Dynasty, Horse Chestnut, Ipi Tombe and overseas Secretariat (pictured above), Sea Biscuit, Cigar, Ruffian, Ouija Board tittilates the senses and brings a feeling of awe and wonder.
